International Women’s Peace Group (IWPG) Melbourne branch (Branch Director Angela Joseph), held the preliminary round of the 8th International Loving-Peace Art Competition in Melbourne in May.

The event took place at three venues — St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School, St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School, and Notting Hill Neighbourhood House — and attracted approximately 360 participants, including students, parents, teachers, school staff, and community members.

The competition is an international peace-culture project designed to help children develop understanding and empathy by expressing the values of peace, respect, consideration, and diversity through art. The program emphasizes communication over competition and values the creative process as much as the final result.

At St. Joseph the Worker Catholic Primary School, 135 of the school’s 225 students participated, with a total of 275 attendees including teachers and parents. More than 50 people also attended the event at St. Anthony’s Catholic Primary School to view and celebrate the children’s artwork. Representatives from both schools expressed their intention to continue collaborating with IWPG in the future.

The initiative also extended beyond the school setting. The Melbourne branch partnered with Extended Families Australia, an organization that supports families of children with developmental disabilities, to provide a special program for 14 families with autistic children. The program received positive feedback for its flexible approach, which was tailored to the children’s individual needs and abilities.

“Peace is one of the most important values we must pass on to future generations,” said Angela Joseph, head of the IWPG Melbourne Branch. “When schools, families, and local communities work together to support children’s growth, peace can become a natural part of everyday culture.”
